📜A House with Nearly 200 Years of History

Welcome to 1099 Massachusetts Avenue, a home that has been part of Lexington's story since 1827 — just 52 years after the Battle of Lexington, where the first shots of the American Revolution were fired. Built in the Federal/Greek Revival style, the house was originally owned by members of the Pierce family, among the early residents of what is now East Lexington. In the late 19th century, the property became associated with Rhodes Lockwood, giving rise to the name "Pierce-Lockwood House."

Over the years, the surrounding area evolved from a rural farming community into the vibrant neighborhood you see today. Although the property changed with the widening of Massachusetts Avenue and the construction of a filling station on part of its original land in the 1920s, the house remains an important reminder of Lexington's early architectural and community history. We hope you enjoy your stay and become part of this home's nearly two-century story.

• Check-in time: 4:00 PM or later
• Entry: Self check-in via smart lock. Your personal smart lock code will be shared with you before arrival.
• Parking: Our driveway comfortably fits up to 5 cars. Please don't park in the garage, at the gas station next door, or on adjacent streets.
• Luggage: Feel free to bring bags in through the front entry — please remove shoes just inside.

🛋️House Guide

Kitchen

The kitchen is anchored by a large island and fully equipped for cooking. Our range is induction — it uses a magnetic field to heat the pot or pan directly, so the cooktop itself stays relatively cool and only magnetic (e.g. cast iron or most stainless steel) cookware will work. Because the top is glass, please don't use abrasive cleaning tools, and take care not to scrape or slide pots across it.

Dining Room & Living Spaces

The dining room features built-in bookcases and classic wood detailing. The main living room and piano room offer additional space to relax — please treat the piano gently, it's tuned and original to the home.

Finished Basement

Downstairs you'll find a large sectional, a bar, and a home gym — feel free to make use of it during your stay.

Bedrooms & Bathrooms

7 bedrooms and 3.5 baths across the home. Extra linens and towels for 2nd floor bedrooms are in the 2nd floor hallway linen closet; for 3rd floor bedrooms, extra linens and towels are on shelves in each room.

Laundry

There are two sets of laundry machines available: one on the 2nd floor, and one in the basement.

Heating & Thermostat

Thermostats are set to comfortable ranges and shouldn't need adjusting, but each zone can be adjusted manually if needed. You may notice a few small white sensors around the house — these are just temperature sensors for the heating/cooling system.

💧 Water Shut-Off

This house has an automatic water detector that will shut off water to the whole house if it senses more than 30 minutes of continuous water flow. Please keep this in mind during showers or baths so you don't trigger an unexpected shutoff.

🔒 Locked Areas

A few areas of the home are private and kept locked: the storage room in the basement, and the two spaces attached to the garage. Everything else is yours to enjoy.

⚠️ Steep Back Stairs & Uneven Landing

This is an old house with a few quirks worth knowing: the back stairs from the 2nd floor down to the kitchen are quite steep, and the landing outside the laundry room on the 2nd floor has an unusual stair height. Please take care, especially at night or with kids.

🧭Local Favorites

• Minuteman Bikeway (Trail) — accessible right from the end of our driveway on Maple Street; the ramp there heads straight down onto the trail, a former stop on the old railway line. Walk or bike one of the area's best-loved paths right from home.
• Joyce Miller Meadow & Arlington Great Meadow — a 5-minute walk down the trail leads to Joyce Miller Meadow, which connects into Arlington Great Meadow: over 100 acres of trails and boardwalks through forest and marsh.
• Wilson Farm — a beloved local farm stand for produce, baked goods, and more.
• Lexington Center — shops and restaurants just minutes away.
• Lexington Battle Green, Buckman Tavern & Minuteman National Historical Park — Revolutionary War history right in town.
• Boston, Cambridge & Concord — all an easy drive if you'd like to explore further.

🚌Getting Around

An MBTA bus route runs along Massachusetts Avenue, with several stops right near the house — easy access into Arlington, Cambridge, and Boston, or further west to Lincoln and Bedford.

Alewife Station, the start of the MBTA Red Line subway, is the main transit hub nearby.

🧳Check-Out

• Check-out time: 10:00 AM
• Gather used towels
• Throw trash away
• Turn things off (lights, fans, etc.)
• Lock up before you leave
